When I spot a model of colour on a magazine cover it invariably grabs my attention and it definitely makes me feel like we’re winning! Vogue España’s take the prize this month with Aya Jones on the cover of their March 2016 issue.
The French Ivorien model rocks cornrows and Valentino Spring 2016 for her cover shot which was photographed on location in Botswana in southern Africa by Spanish photographer Nico Bustos for the “black power” issue which the magazine describes as a tribute to black beauty and the African continent.
Now, it does bother me that these magazines do these ‘special’ issues that seem to focus on Africa and black models as a theme, as exotica and unusual, always with the safari, animal print and the epic views and animals as props.
More black models in everything and varied, positive stories from the African continent and experience would be better but at least for this issue I’ll take it. Easy chic pieces, only the one animal print look and a clean modern feel (albeit still safari inspired) make it a stylish offering.
The cover reads La Reina De Africa (The African Queen) and Black is Beautiful and delivers, with Aya’s cover editorial (styled by Belen Antolin, make up by Jurgen Brown and hair by Karim Belghiran), beauties Herieth Paul, Kai Newman, Jasmine Tookes, Ysaunny Brito, Maria Borges, Francine James, and Riley Montana photographed by Greg Kadel.
