A lot of the time we focus on buying tons of products for the skin, often to make it look better but not necessarily to make it better. From makeup products to skin care products, there are different types for different skin needs and unfortunately a lot of people don’t really know what is good for their skin or their skin type.Â
Knowing your skin type is really important, it is practically the most important thing to consider before making any beauty purchases. The more you know about your skin type, the easier it is for your skin to look as normal and healthy as possible.
Skin differs in its ability to preserve moisture inside the skin surface and the amount of sebum it secretes and can be classified into four major types – oily skin, dry skin, normal skin & oily combination skin. Among these types, some might experience sensitivity. That is, all skin types can also have sensitive skin.
Sensitive skin as the name implies, is a skin type that is sensitive to different things; products, the environment etc. Sensitive skin is prone to redness, itching, dryness, burning etc.
Oily Skin
- The whole skin surface gets oily.
- Enlarged pores.
- You experience a great amount of shine.
- The skin texture is quite rough, you experience open pores that clog up easily with dirt.
- Prone to acne.
- Prone to sensitivity.
Combination Skin
- Oily in certain areas on the skin.
- Experiences shine on the T-zone (the forehead, nose & chin) and the rest part of the face is normal/dry.
- The skin lacks moisture in certain areas
- Might have large or medium sized pores.
Normal SKIN
- Neither oily nor dry
- Medium shine which is rarely experienced.
- The skin texture is smooth.
- Isn’t prone to acne.
- The skin surface is moist.
Dry SkinÂ
- Skin’s moisture retention is weak.
- Skin surface isn’t moist.
- Experiences no shine.
- Skin tends to be flaky and whitish.
- Fine lines are visible in certain parts of the face mostly around the eyes.
- Dryness all over.
I hope you have a better idea of your skin type now!

[…] Do You Know Your Skin Type? […]
Finally I now know that I have a Combination Skin Type. Thanks Winifred for share this
Anytime xx
Hellooo! Thanks for this post. I’ve known for many years that I have combination skin. For years also, I’ve been afraid to apply any cream on my face apart from Extra-virgin Olive oil(which is very light and dries up quickly when my face is moist with water). I have no pimple . Currently I use Johnson and Johnson Day cream with SPF 15 but I’ll really like to know what type of powder to buy. I’ve been using only white powder(to be on the safe side). I’m fair but not too fair.
Hey, I would write a post on products to use on your skin. I haven’t found a powder that helps with my oily skin but one powder everyone swears by is the BlackUp mattifying powder and MAC. I’m yet to try them but you can read reviews online. Hope this helps xx
Dry skin, help!!
Hi, moisturize and moisturize! I would write a detailed post for this okay? Xx
Hello, I just discovered I have a combination skin type but my problem is acne. Am always having eczema
Hi Udoka, firstly, are you sure it’s eczema? Or you are just experiencing skin discoloration? I ask because people tend to confuse the two skin problems.
Hi, Neat post. There’s a problem along with your website in internet explorer, may check this… IE still is the marketplace leader and a large component to other folks will omit your wonderful writing due to this problem.
