It’s the most interesting week in fashion again, couture week is finally here. Since it’s kick off this Monday, designers have dazzled show goers with the usual razzmatazz and load of extra that accompanies the week long event. It’s the chance to go all out after all, sorta like the MET gala of fashion weeks.
Anyways, with the cluster of elaborate designs made specially to blow your minds, it’s no easy feat to actually stand out and futuristic designer Iris Van Herpen certainly did with her ethereal showcase.
No surprise there as Van Herpen regular show goers have probably seen her fragile mix of high technology with expert tailored craftmanship before, but as always it’s like seeing it for the first time.
The collection which featured 17 spell binding looks that were Catniss Everdeen worthy, was termed ‘Syntopia’ by Van Herpen. According to her, the collection explored synthetic biology and the intertwining relationships between the organic and inorganic, biology and technology.
She used chronophotography, a technique from the Victorian era that captures movement in several frames to guide the draping of a garment, breaking the process down to emulate the layering of bird’s feather on sculpted dresses with undulating hems. One could also see the the dramatic red mimesis corset dress pieces made to resemble a bird’s sound wave pattern.
There were also a lot of underwater creature inspired pieces, fin like hems, luminous gowns in sheer silk organza, gray coats and dresses in laser cut wool. View every look from the other-worldly collection below;
