Continued from here.

Jide looks at me then steps closer to the door, listening to the raised voices. I see as his shoulders relax a little as he recognizes them. He shakes his head, his brow wrinkled in confusion and concern.

We silently head back down the stairs to figure out why there is such a disturbance and what might have caused it. As the landing comes into view, we see Jimi looking at the two house helps with irritation. One looks harassed and her eyes are wet. He is standing with one hand on his waist and the other massaging his brows. I spot his Yeezy Boosts 350 and what might be a Yeezy Season 1 sweatshirt. He always did like his fashion. He looks very stylish but perturbed by the issue he is having with the help. He looks over at the stairs and his expression softens as he walks towards us.

Jide addresses the maids.

Jide; “What is going on here?”

The maids are new, well these two are. They are holding their hands in front of them looking down at their feet as if being addressed by school principal. The scene is almost comical. Jimi embraces me and kisses me on the cheeks. I silently wonder what he is doing here unannounced, but I think I can guess.

Jimi; “They didn’t want to let me in, kept insisting that I should call first and asking who I am!”

Imagine. My inner subconscious rolls her eyes.

I laugh lightly. Jide looks from the first maid to the second. They are new, but should have the sense to know that if someone says he is a relative, they should tread softly.

Simultaneously they begin to mutter their apologies; we all look over at Jimi as he brushes it off and smiles boyishly. The maids lower their faces as they blush. Jimi is such a ladies man, I am not surprised. Jide joins us and thumps him on the back as they begin to chat away. I make my way to the kitchen to have a talk with the maids and arrange some refreshments.

I join them in the den with a maid in tow a tray with wine for Jimi and a can of Heineken for Jide with some wings.

I join them in the den with a maid in tow with a tray with wine for Jimi, a can of Heineken for Jide and some wings.

“I was on my way back from dropping Zara off at the airport, so I decided to drop by.” Jimi says, beaming at the mention of her name. It’s clear he really likes this girl, and he clearly isn’t aware that I am pregnant.

I look down at my hands playing with my fingers and my rock.

Jide reaches for the wings, turning to look at me.

Jide; “Babe, you want some?”

He winks at me. He’s noticed Jimis excitement about Zara and his obliviousness about our news too.

I smile and shake my head. The conversation moves back to Jimi who is uncorking the wine.

“You really like her I see, and I think she must be good for you. I mean any any girl that can make you drop her at the airport. You?! She must be gold plated.” Jide teases.

Jimi throws his head back and laughs wholeheartedly.

Me: “She seems really sweet and so funny. Where is she off to?”

Jimi is blushing visibly now. Jide and I exchange another look, enjoying teasing him.

Jimi; “She doensn’t live here actually. She works as a dentist in Connecticut, so it’s a lot of time on planes back and forth here and there. She and her sis are about to move here though. Open a private practice, so it’s a lot of close up right now.

Jide is on his third wing as he nods, impressed.

Jide: “A dentist huh? Impressive. Wait a minute… Remind me again what she saw in you??”

We all burst out laughing. Jimi swipes Jide on the arm.

Jimi: “I am quite a catch myself, I have mad husband skills, and she knows.”

We laugh again.

Me: “Yes I have to agree, Beauty & brains! She seems to have a really good head on her shoulders, that’s good.”

He is blushing again.

Jimi: “I think I’m really into her, she’s really good for me, grounded, put together, understanding and it’s just really good, right now I don’t think I want more in a partner…”

I pinch Jide and we manage to hold back our laughter at the look of pure love on Jimi’s face. Homeboy is whipped!

Jide: “When is the wedding again?”

Jimi pauses with a wing midair. He puts it back on his plate.

Jimi: “What wedding?”

I giggle, oh Jide is having a good time alright.

Jimi catches on and tosses a paper napkin in his direction.

Jimi: “She has a kid… He is about 5.”

I look up at Jimi, slightly shocked, not because of the kid, but that Jimi would settle down with someone with a child. I don’t know, but he just seemed like the kind of guy that won’t be caught dead in that ‘position’. He must really love her.

Jide: “Have you met the kid?”

Trust Jide to carry on like it’s just a piece of cake. I love this man.

Jimi is blushing again.

Jimi: “His name is Ayo… We play soccer on Wednesdays, when we can, but his Dad is actively in the picture. That’s why I’m here…”

Jimi nods earnestly topping up his glass.

Jimi: “You two always have all the answers and you’re my big bro, isn’t this your forte? Having a kid with Regina and marrying Buks, what’s that like? I don’t want to push it… and I can’t ask Zara; ‘Hey what’s the limit with Ayo?’ I mean can I take him to the movies? Am I allowed to buy him stuff? What does he call me? I don’t want Dad or anything but I really really love his Mum, and I want a part in Ayo’s life… But Hey! I’m not his Dad, you know…”

Aww…

I want to say something, but instead I just take his hand and squeeze it in reassurance.

Jide: “You know what bro, you’re genuine. What you feel for Zara isn’t forced or fleeting, so don’t push, just let it flow naturally. Take things as they come. Don’t try to be his Dad, and just leave him to decide what he calls you for now. Also, try not to let not being sure what to do with him bother you too much. Just try to be a really good man for his Mum, love Zara right, you know. No hassle. Baby steps… If it’s right you’ll know, all of you will.”

Just right.

Jimi smiles, looking into space, deep in thought. He looks at Jide and smiles even wider.

“Aww see who is all mushy and in love. Buks must have done a number on you…”He teases.

Jide rolls his eyes, chugging down the rest of his beer.

Jide: “Be a fool about it. Fresher. Soon you’ll be riding around in a mini van all in love up and whooped!”

We all laugh.

Jimi: “Buks you want a glass?”

He indicates at an empty glass with the bottle.

Uh oh..

Then the boys and Lo come into the den. The room explodes in pure glee as everyone hustles to say hello and hug the next person. The boys are growing every day! They look so tall and more like Lo everyday. I lead them away to what has become the playroom. We catch up for a bit as I settle them in to play some video games and they ask me if they’re getting a little sister or a brother. So sweet! I don’t try to correct them that the baby will actually be their cousin. I smile and tell them they’ll love whichever they get. They think about it for a second and smile as they nod their agreement.

Lo comes into the room and we share a smile. She looks very chic and pretty in a sheer Wolford top over a camisole with leggings and the Mary Katrantzou adidas trainers sde’s been lusting after recently. I think she has a problem.

Lo: “I still can’t believe it Buks! You a Mummy! Wow! I remember when we had our first boyfriends now you are about to be someone’s wife and a mother!

We both laugh and the boys keep playing their PS4 paying us no mind.

Me: “I keep replaying how things went at the hospital, wondering what I would have done if we got different news. Bad news.”

Lo sits on the floor with the boys and I settle back into an easy chair.

Lo: “I was scared, so worried but I just knew it was going to go well and I just have so much faith in Jide, I knew he would see you through this.

I smile.

Me: “We were so relieved, so happy! It’s a new chapter and this time it feels so right.”

I tell her about Maami and her reaction and we giggle over it.

Lo: “She must be so grateful to God and content, all her kids are doing so well and happy. It’s like a miracle, a year ago we weren’t even speaking to each other as much, you know. Rene was up and down, you and you know who… and all. Then you met Jide and he brought it all together so nicely.

Sigh… Jide. My Mr. Tom Ford.

I smile.

Lo: “What are you thinking?”

I look into her eyes.

Me: “I want a happy ending Lo…”

She reaches for my hand and holds it firmly in hers squeezing it reassuringly.

Lo: “That’s what this is… Even better, it‘s a happy beginning… You’ll see. I promise.”

I nod and a tear slips from my eye.

She hugs me.

The maid comes into the room with burgers, juice and salads for the boys. I seriously doubt that they are going to touch the salad.

Me: “We need to look for the perfect location for Yeka’s baby shower.”

Lo pulls out her phone.

Lo: “I found this yacht, we could get it for the whole weekend. What do you think? Something like what Tiwa Savage did, but for a couple nights.”

I wrinkle my nose.

Me: “That’s a bit played out. Why don’t we all fly to Ghana and use Jide’s beach house?”

Lo beams and starts hopping on the sofa.

Lo: “I’m in! Yesss!”

We call the girls and soon it’s a full on conference call. We tell them what we have in mind and they are all excited, Yeka especially.

Yeka: “You guys are the best friends and sisters a girl could wish for!”

I swear I hear her sniffle.

We decide on tentative dates and plan to clear schedules and regroup on Whatsapp then sign off.

The squad is about to storm Accra!

Akwaaba!

Lo: “Okay. So I am in charge of the itinerary and logistics. I just have to…”

She trails off as she opens up one of her many apps for organizing absolutely everything.

I smile.

Me: “I haven’t asked the king if we can borrow his palace for a weekend oh.”

We both laugh and Lo makes a dismissive gesture with her hand.

Lo: “You know he can’t say no to you. And also if he can get us on a private plane, we will off course appreciate it.”

We dissolve into giggles.

Me: “Oh yes! I shall inquire.”

Lo: “Does Jimi know about the baby?”

I smile and shrug.

Me: “I’m sure Jide has told him, but he isn’t saying anything. I’ll get it out of him.”

I stretch and excuse myself to go to the bathroom.

A few steps down the hall and my phone beeps again. Ugh. It’s work. I shiver in fear as I imagine the incredible workload that will be waiting on my desk for me.

I call my assistant and she catches me up on what’s been happening in a 15 minute phone call. At least I won’t be walking in blind.

Whew…

As I make my way to the bathroom my head is filled with thoughts of the baby shower and all the fun we will have in Accra. My subconscious shakes her head and asks if I think Jide will just let me go?

Of course he will! I retort defensively, we aren’t going skiing!

I pee and wipe and something bright red catches my eye. Blood?

I get fresh tissue and wipe again and check. My heart stops for a second.

Blood.

Continues next Tuesday.
