”Welcome to the Chanel Airlines and relax while Chanel takes you through the most beautiful journey in fashion history.” I imagine this is the announcement that was made before the Chanel Spring/Summer 2016 presentation.
On the penultimate day of Paris Fashion Week, the 6th of October, Chanel had his audience embark on a fashion journey at the Grand Palais which was transformed into a life-size Chanel Airlines terminal.
Guests handed over retro-style plane tickets before passing through security and into a dazzling all-white departure lounge, complete with roaming pilots, branded luggage trolleys and check-in desks rows of terminal seating for guests, a ticket booth, numbered gates, a flight board, and had models walking down the “runway” dragging roller luggage.
The atmosphere was incredible. It looks so real even to me sitting at my laptop some thousands of kilometers away, so I can only imagine how real it felt.
At the event, Anna Dello Russo, the Japan Vogue editor-at-large speaking to the NYTimes correspondent said “I’ve seen at least 10 women here wearing the same outfit as me this morning — that doesn’t happen very often, I assure you. But I don’t mind. This is like a Lunar Park, a make-believe playground where grown-ups can pretend. Look how much fun everyone is having. This is, for me, what fashion is all about.”
Of course a Chanel show isn’t complete without loads of celebrity sightings and time it had people like like Anna Wintour, tennis player Maria Sharapova, Cara Delevingne and girlfriend St. Vincent, Kris Jenner, Lewis Hamilton, Janelle Monae among others.
For his final bow, Lagerfeld walked through the terminal and was met by Cara Delevingne and the designer’s godson Hudson Kroenig.
Although I’m not a big fan of the collection, it made an impression with the clothes continuing the airline theme with pins and accessories inspired by the aircraft, a jumpsuit borrowing from the look of an arrivals board and sweaters and pants printed with an airplane pattern. The brand’s iconic tweed suits were also presented in different colour ways.
I might not love the clothes but a lilac suit worn with layered necklaces and ankle high transparent silver sandals stood out as my favourite look. Also note worthy are the Velcro sandals and a cute little bag shaped like a pull along case that’s defintely my favorite accessory from the Chanel Spring Summer 2016 show.
