No one can deny the important role of Public Relations in the Fashion world, it is an exciting, fast-paced field where the work is extensive. Being a fashion PR may seem very cool because you’d get to attend the coolest parties, meet your favorite celebrities and designers and may even get the opportunity to work with awesome brands but there is a lot of wearisome work  and often you’d find yourself behind the scenes watching the glamour while you work. Most people believe its an easy job  and when they find out there is more going on that meets the eye, they no longer pursue the career, so before you decide to go into that area make sure you know yourself and know that you have what it takes.

To begin with, it is dire that you understand how the fashion industry works, get some experience through volunteer work at some fashion organization or whatever organization that’s  connected to the industry. That way you’d understand the industry better and also meet people who are already in the business.

Here are a few things that are  required of you to be a successful fashion PR

Branding: The fashion PR industry focuses on managing brand positioning and developing brand awareness. In branding you should be able to make your client’s brand a distinctive one. You need to be able to spot the things that make your client distinctive, and also have skills that would help you  narrow the focus of the apparel you are promoting. This is one of the important jobs of a Fashion PR, because PR professionals are always found in the background and behind the scenes but brands are always at the front.

Understanding The Role of Social Media and Media Trends:  This is of utmost importance with today’s technology and, with the internet and social media being a major tool for whatever business you want go into especially Fashion. With at least 300 million people just on Instagram alone one needs to keep coming up with new ideas and ways to work effectively with social media, you can either hire someone to oversee such task or do it yourself but innovation, creativity and the ability to juggle multiple interests are ingredients for success. Things like interviews and press releases are also part of the responsibilities of a PR, you must also have the ability to work with the media gaining continued attention for your clients, fashion is about staying in front-line in the eyes of the public.

Pitching Ideas to Fashion Brands and Magazines: As a fashion PR you’d work with editors of major fashion magazines.There is no denying that press is really important for brands.  The influence of magazines, whether in print or online, traditional fashion favorites or new lifestyle magazines, is huge in the retail industry. Pitching your fashion brand and getting the right press placement can sell out an item for the season or help to land that first appointment with an important retailer. But pitching your idea might not be as simple as it seems, but with the right exposure you’d realize that you need to know what and who you are pitching your idea to, pitch the right idea at the right time, and others.

How skilled are you in working with models and celebrities and the agents who represent them? Failure to communicate efficiently and present a pleasing image will be a certain failure for your efforts as a PR professional and for your clients.

Making a career choice in fashion is never easy, but the few steps  outlined above will give you almost everything you need to make a change and thrive in the exciting and fast paced world of fashion PR.
