“I don't think there is enough inclusivity in the modelling industry” - Idowu Teminikan

A Tale of Style, Confidence, and Dreams: Chit Chat with Teminikan

We recently had the pleasure of catching up with award-winning model, Idowu Teminikanijesu as our first guest on our new chitchat series where we delve into the lives of remarkable individuals.

And we got to discover that Teminikan is not your average model.

She's a whole package of awesomeness, with a passion for fashion and a love for life's little joys.

She’s all about living life to the fullest and not just strutting on the runway or posing for the cameras.

Enjoy our conversation with Teminikanijesu as she spills the tea on her career, dreams and all the juicy details that make her one-of-a-kind

What are five things you're loving right now?

Loving my relationship with God, my bedroom decor, and a pair of Zara boots I bought. I just started a new business course online, and I am loving it (I didn’t think I would enjoy it so much). Parfaits! They just make my day. And of course, my man, my man, my man (laughs)

What's your favourite fashion-related movie or TV show, and which character's style do you admire the most?

I’m obsessed with Emily in Paris! I mean, Emily (Lily Collins) is too cute in her outfits. But let's talk about Mindy (Ashley Park) – her style game was top-notch. I'm also obsessed with Next in Fashion. I look forward to seeing what each designer comes up with year after year.

If you could attend any fashion event in the world, whether it's a runway show, fashion week, or gala, which one would it be and why?

Attending New York Fashion Week next year by God's grace (always been on my wishlist) – either I would be walking or watching – one must happen. It would be a dream come true. There is just so much thrill off of fashion weeks – the clothes, the people, the buzz, the rush, everything – and this would be NEW YORK! (I would scream inside silently) Haha!

Do you have a celebrity lookalike?

Oh yes, I get Tiwa Savage a lot from Nigerians. My foreign friends say Zoe Saldana (lol)

How do you stay confident and maintain your self-esteem in an industry known for its standards of beauty?

To be very honest, I would say being oneself in a world where many people try to be like others is the easiest thing to do.

When you are yourself, it's less work, and you can just breathe without thinking about the next lie to set you above some standard.

Also, staying confident is usually more about feeling it, a state of mind. Basically, it means you can't let people's opinions of you matter. What matters is what you think of yourself, and that births self-esteem. Selah

What is the most expensive item you own?

It would be between my name-customised diamond piece from BOZ Jewelry and my Saint Laurent Baby Sac Bag (which was a gift, though). Followed closely by my wigs (have you seen the price of wigs lately? Especially when you have them long... haha

Describe your dream fashion-themed party. What would the dress code be, and what activities or entertainment would you have?

I have dreamt of having a Harry Potter-themed party, haha!

Imagine the different characters taken to the highest level of creation – Snape, Dumbledore, the Weasleys, even Voldemort, etc. It would be very fun, and we would have magic spell cocktails and witch-brewed food everywhere, haha. We could play spell games and truth or dare, it would be epic!

What's next for you? Any upcoming projects or goals you're excited about?

Yes, I am on a project in the works and I really can’t wait for it to be out and everywhere.

Have you ever encountered negative media attention? If so, how did you handle the situation?

(Laughs) Yes, I have learned that keeping quiet is usually the best answer.

The only time you talk is when you don't mind the lengthy dragging because I assure you it would drag

What techniques do you use to prepare yourself for a photo shoot or runway show?

Hmmm usually, I go for a facial and massage session a week before to prepare my face and body for the hoolabalulu coming (that’s in the case of a runway show/fashion week)

For shoots, I exfoliate my face a day before to remove any previous impurities before the next makeup.

What challenges have you faced in your modelling career, and how did you overcome them?

Many challenges, to be honest, but the most frequent one is usually the instability of the job.

It might take some time to build a stable clientele, especially when you are full-time. Also, there is the challenge of rejection, especially in the early stages. You just have to get used to it and embrace the 'NOs,' knowing that if you stay consistent, they can turn into 'YESes.'

It won't be easy, that I can assure you, but with consistency, you will get there.

What are your thoughts on diversity and inclusion in the modelling industry, and how do you advocate for change?

I don't think there is enough inclusivity in the modelling industry.

Most campaigns are full of whites, and then there is just one black girl or guy, which shouldn't be so. I believe this should change, and hopefully, brands start to see black models as necessities and not just objects to decorate a shoot

Can you share any tips for maintaining confidence and poise during high-pressure situations like fashion week or major events?

After every day's work during fashion week, ensure to rest and sleep.

I wouldn't advise going out to party or chill until the last day or on a day when energy is pumped.

It's always best to be well-rested and not sleep-deprived because every ounce of energy is needed.

Keep your head high and don't be bullied by anyone, whether a designer, assistant or whoever.

Deodorant is very, very, very important. When you smell nice, you feel good.

Also, stay in one place and avoid moving around a lot so as not to miss fittings or even the show itself.

Conclusion:

Idowu Teminikanijesu has given us a glimpse into her world as a model and a woman of substance.

One thing is certain – Teminikanijesu's star will continue to shine brightly, leaving a lasting mark on the world of fashion and beyond. We eagerly await to see what the future holds for her.
