A new month means a new slate of movies and TV to enjoy, and September is special because it marks a change in seasons. While this month might not be full of blockbusters, there’s still a lot to pique any viewer’s interest. My Father’s Shadow - September 21

Although not a new September release, we would be remiss not to mention that Akinola Davies Jr’s BAFTA winning drama will finally be available on streaming this month. Set against the backdrop of the 1993 Nigerian elections, the movie follows two brothers and their estranged father on a trip as they navigate their fraught relationship amid a tense political landscape. The movie stars Sope Dirisu, best known for movies Mr Malcolm’s List and British action crime drama television series Gangs of London, as Folarin, alongside Godwin Chiemere Egbo and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo as his sons Akin and Remi.
A Mama Deola Wedding Story - September 3

African streaming site Kava TV marks its first original movie with A Mama Deola Wedding Story. The movie is based on Folagade Bank’s iconic skit character Mama Deola and follows the wedding of her son Femi to Demilade. The comedy will follow the chaotic ups and downs that surround the wedding as Mama Deola is determined to deliver the dream wedding to her son. Fans of chaotic Nollywood comedies will absolutely love this movie. The cast includes Nollywood icon Omowunmi Dada (Jemeji, Madam Koi Koi), Rotimi Salami, Shaffy Bello, Bukky Wright and more familiar faces.

Set in 1966 Mississippi, the American movie stars Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a former mafia hitman turned FBI informant and FBI agent, respectively, as they team up to investigate a string of murders of civil rights leaders. Other cast members include Nicole Beharie, Josh Lucas, LisaGay Hamilton, Giancarlo Esposito and more. If you enjoy politically charged crime thrillers and a classic lawman and outlaw pairing, this movie is for you.
Why Did I Get Married Again - September 9

Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again reassembles the iconic cast from the first two movies for a third time. This movie sees the group on a trip to Italy to celebrate the marriage of Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus’ (Michael Jai White) daughter, Jasmine (Armani Greer) to Wesley (Everett Osbourne). Taraji P. Henson joins the cast as Rosely, Wesley’s mother and a long-time friend of the O.G. group, though this is her first official introduction to the franchise. The movie is guaranteed to be both hilarious and heartfelt in signature Tyler Perry fashion.
Invitation to Kill - September 11

From director Chuks ‘Big Tiger’ Obaze’, this movie follows an agro-businessman named Julian who has to start over after both his business and marriage fail. The movie follows him as he struggles with finances, emotional challenges, fatherhood and the difficulty of starting over so late. Kalu Ikeagwu, best known for Lionheart, Tinsel, A Lagos Love Story, and many more hits, helms the cast, which includes Greg Ojefua, Oma Iyasara, Tonia Chukwurah, Annabel Thaddeus, and Efua Bona.
One Gidi Night - September 11

James Abinibi’s neo-noir thriller, One Gidi Night, stars Gabriel Afolayan (Hoodrush, Lisabi: The Uprising), Uzor Arukwe (Chief Daddy 2, Love in Every Word), Wunmi Toriola (Queen Lateefah, Ginger), Ibrahim Yekini (Koleoso), Idia Aisien, and Kevin Ikeduba. The movie follows a man named Ejiro who, desperate to provide for himself and his pregnant wife, decides to take a risky job one night. His choice lands him in the dark underbelly of Lagos, where survival comes at a high cost and he has to fight for his life to return home to his wife.
Resident Evil - September 18

Horror fans strap in because a new Resident Evil reboot is hitting theatres this month. The movie is based around the timeline of the video game Resident Evil 2 but doesn't adapt any of the games specifically, instead using the world and setting to tell a new story. Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier who finds himself trapped in a zombie outbreak in Racoon City while making a delivery. Supporting cast include Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser.
The Love Hypothesis - September 23

Romcom fans and booktok girlies will have had this adaptation on their radar for a while now. Based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, The Love Hypothesis stars Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman as Olive and Adam, a PhD candidate and her professor. Exhausted from constant questions around her romantic life, Olive proposes a fake-dating scenario to Adam, but what starts as a ruse gets complicated as real feelings get involved.
Starlomo - September 25

Comedian Kamo State makes his producing debut in Starlomo, where he stars alongside Mike Afolarin (A Lagos Love Story, House of Ga’a), KieKie (Alakada: Bad and Boujee), Lateef Adedimeji (Lisabi: The Uprising, King of Thieves), Folake Babatunde and Koyin Sanusi. The movie, directed by Kayode Kasum, is a heartfelt passion project about the sacrifices it takes to follow your dreams. It follows a young, aspiring musician, “Starlomo”, determined to make it in Lagos, even as the city begins to reveal its dark underbelly to him.

The Gentlemen Season 2 - September 3

Guy Ritchie’s highly acclaimed comedy action series, The Gentlemen, will return for a second season on Netflix this month. The series follows Eddie Horniman, played by Theo James, a former army captain who inherits his father's estate – and his criminal connections, after his death. After a critically acclaimed first season that took home 7 Primetime Emmy Awards, fans of this series are in for a treat as the story continues. Kaya Scodelario and Daniel Ings star alongside James.
Ordinary People - September 4

This Nollywood action thriller was directed by Moses Inwang and has a star-studded cast including Ramsey Nouah (Merry Men, Living in Bondage), Chidi Mokeme (To Kill a Monkey), Adunni Ade (Tokunbo), Sharon Ooja (Oloture), Gbenga Titiloye (Battleground), Uche Montana (Hush), Michelle Dede, Lasisi Elenu, Jackie Appiah and more. The series is set in the fictional Mirage Estate and follows its residents as they uncover each other's secrets and discover that their neighbours may not be who they seem.
Neagley - September 16

This sequel to the hit Prime Video series Reacher follows fan favourite character and former 110th Special Investigations Unit member, Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten. Unlike Reacher, which is an action crime show, Neagley will be more of a crime thriller and follows the eponymous lead as she investigates the suspicious death of a friend, so if you wanted more of the Reacher world, this show is for you. Greyson Holt, Jasper Jones, Adeline Rudolf, Matthew Del Negro and Damon Herriman join Sten to round out the cast.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story - September 17

The next instalment of Ryan Murphy’s Monster series airs this month for all true crime fans. This season, titled The Lizzie Borden Story, follows the famous 1892 case of Lizzie Borden, who was accused of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe. The season will star Ella Beatty, Vicky Krieps, Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall and Sarah Paulson.
A Different World - September 24

This reboot of the iconic 80s series of the same name is coming to Netflix this month, and fans can’t be more excited. A different world stars Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitney Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at the Historically Black College, Hillman College, her parents’ alma mater. Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy are returning as Dwayne and Whitney, alongside Darryl M. Bell as Ron, Cree Summer as Freddie, Karen Malina White, and Ajai Sanders.
